Officials deal with Moody County hoax emergency call
WARD, S.D. (AP) - Law enforcement authorities in eastern South Dakota are investigating a hoax emergency call that resulted in almost two dozen officers being dispatched to a home.
A caller claiming to be a 16-year-old boy from Ward told emergency operators in Moody County that he had shot one of his parents, had three family members held hostage and had rigged the house with a bomb that would explode if the doors were opened.
Sheriff Troy Wellman says officers found the call was a hoax when they responded to the scene.
Wellman told the station the call is part of a phenomenon called "swatting" that is being used by video gamers in a competition where their success is based on the level of response by law enforcement authorities.
