SDSU SOFTBALL…South Dakota defeated instate rival South Dakota State, 7-2 in the opening game of the 2014 Summit League Softball Championship.
   The Coyotes scored early as they plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first off of a lead-off walk and two hits and stayed ahead the rest of the game. South Dakota extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second, scoring the winning run off of a pair of singles and a hit batter. USD scored two insurance runs in the fourth and added one in the fifth and sixth.
   South Dakota's Rachel Cue kept South Dakota State hitless until the top of the fourth but couldn't keep the Jackrabbits off the scoreboard as they rallied with two outs in the top of the seventh scoring a pair of runs on three-straight hits.
   Katie Dinning and Christine Broders led the South Dakota offense each hitting 2-for-3 on the day as Dinning added a run and a RBI and Broders scored a pair of runs.
   The Jackrabbits play Western Illinois Thursday at 3:00pm in an elimination game. IUPUI beat Western Illinois 10-2 Wednesday.

KOCER HONORED…SDSU wrestler Alex Kocer has been named to the 2013-14 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
   Kocer owns a 3.28 GPA as an exploratory studies major. On the mat, the Redfield native went 29-13 in his debut season en route to a Western Wrestling Conference championship and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

O’G WR COACH…Matt Lynch, an assistant wrestling coach at O'Gorman the past 10 years, in the school's new head coach. Lynch is a former Roosevelt wrestler. He replaces Jeff Gordon, who retired from coaching after 37 years at O'Gorman, the last 29 as the head coach.

AUCTION BUCKS…The 2014 Jackrabbit Athletics Scholarship Auction raised $510,000, a new record for the event.
   There were 260 live and silent auction items were up for bid with an anonymous donor matching every dollar raised.
   The live and silent auction had the highest bid of $20,000 coming for a golf cart donated by Brookings Auto Mall. Over 680 fans registered for mobile bidding, as it was offered for the first time this year.
   The money raised from this event goes directly to fund 35 student-athlete scholarships.

WILDLIFE PLAN… The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is seeking comment on the South Dakota Wildlife Action Draft Plan Revision.
   The revision provides a habitat-based framework to help prevent future endangered species listings and keep common species common. Some fish and wildlife species that are not game species may have special habitat or restoration needs.
   The draft plan also includes descriptions and identified needs for species of conservation concern as well as challenges and actions that relate to fish and wildlife species and habitats.
   The draft plan is available on the GFP website. Comments must be received by June 6, 2014.

CRAZY COMEBACK… A minor league team of the Seattle Mariners has pulled off a major rally, coming back from a 16-run deficit to win in the Class A Midwest League.
   The Clinton LumberKings trailed the Burlington Bees 17-1 after five innings Wednesday night in the game between clubs based in Iowa. Clinton wound up winning 20-17 in 12 innings.
   Clinton scored six runs in the sixth inning, five in the eighth and five more in the ninth to tie it at 17.
   Justin Seager, the younger brother of Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager, drove in the go-ahead run in the 12th. Seager finished with four hits.
   Burlington is an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels.
