State prison officials says penitentiary is still safe

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Corrections officials say the capture of a State Penitentiary inmate's wife as she tried to give contraband to her husband isn't a sign that the prison's minimum-security unit is unsafe.
Rebecca Bordeaux was arrested Saturday after allegedly giving husband Dayzsha Bordeaux cigarettes and cold pills while he was chopping wood in an unsecured area of the prison grounds. Authorities said the couple was caught having sex.
Corrections Secretary Denny Kaemingk says that giving inmates rights and responsibilities is a matter of preparing them for freedom instead of springing it on them and expecting them to handle it appropriately.
Penitentiary Warden Darin Young says minimum-security inmates are given breath tests for alcohol as they return from outside, are pat-searched by staff and subject to random strip searches.
