Brooking man arrested after standoff with police

A 30-year-old Brookings man is in custody after an hours-long standoff with police.

Brookings Police responded to a report of gunshots fired around 5:15 Monday morning
at Westview Estates mobile home park. Police were told the man had fired a handgun and
also had a high-powered rifle.

The Brookings Special Response team and police negotiators went to the scene. After
attempting to make contact with the subject, the tactical team used gas to draw the man
out of his home. Brookings Police Chief Jeff Miller says police also had to fire non-lethal
impact rounds at the man as he continued to be uncooperative and aggressive toward
officers.

The man was arrested on charges of possessing a firearm while intoxicated and
discharging a firearm. Additional charges are possible.

The  man suffered a minor injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment. No one
else was injured.  The suspect was alone at the residence as his two roommates were
not home at the time he was taken into custody.
