Martin teen to stand trial as an adult in beating death
MARTIN, S.D. (AP) - A Martin teenager accused of bludgeoning a man to death in November 2012 will be tried as an adult.
Matthew Libby was 17 when he was indicted on murder and other charges in the Nov. 8, 2012, slaying of 48-year-old Albert Apple Sr. His attorneys sought to move the case to juvenile court, but Judge Kathleen Trandahl has rejected the request.
A June 10 hearing is scheduled to set a trial date for Libby, who is now 19.
Apple's body was found in a ditch along a Bennett County gravel road. Authorities say an autopsy showed that he died from severe blunt force trauma to his head.
