Eight more SD communities sign up for statehood celebration

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Eight more South Dakota communities have established committees to help celebrate the state's 125th anniversary of statehood.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard says the new local committees are in Harrisburg, Ipswich, Tabor, Frederick, Lake Norden, Stickney, Geddes and Lawrence County. They're planning various events leading up to the Nov. 2 anniversary.

President Benjamin Harrison on Nov. 2, 1889, signed the papers for admission to the Union for both South Dakota and North Dakota. North Dakota became the 39th state and South Dakota the 40th.

Daugaard says 17 South Dakota towns, cities and groups have now become official statehood celebration communities.
