FOB-SPRINGS…The Brookings Friends of Baseball will hold a fundraiser during this weekend’s Hauschild tournament to help a former resident who lost a home this week in the Wessington Springs tornado.
Friday night the Bandits host Groton in the final game of the first day of the tourney. The organization is having a split pot and free will donation for Mitch McLagan and his family. Mitch is a former player and coach in the program. He, his wife, and their two daughters - ages 2 & 6 - live in Wessington Springs. The family is alright, but lost all their possessions in the storm.

DOWLING HONORED…Pierre’s Cortney Dowling has repeated as the Gatorade Girls’ Track & Field Athlete of the Year for South Dakota.
The sophomore sprinter won three individual state championships this spring. Dowling captured the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.15 seconds, the 200-meter dash with a meet-record clocking of 25.56 and broke the statewide record in the 400-meter dash in 55.11. She also won the 100 (12.22 seconds) and the 200 (24.78) at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.

NATIONAL COACH AWARDS… The National High School Athletic Coaches Association has named its 2014 Coach of the Year Winners.
Selected from South Dakota were Steve Keszler of Sturgis Brown High School, Wrestling Coach of the Year; Mark Upward of Vermillion High School, Special Sports-Gymnastics Coach of the Year and Mary Ellen Luikens of Scotland High School, Assistant Coach of the Year in Girls’ Sports.
Also inducted into the 2014 NHSACA Hall of Fame were Rod Garrison of Parker and Jim Haar of Rapid City.

PARK CLOSURES…Flooding in southeast South Dakota has forced the temporary closure of several state parks.
Approximately half of the campsites at Big Sioux Recreation Area near Brandon are closed until flood waters recede.
The Visitor Center at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve in North Sioux City will be closed until at least Monday, June 23, depending on conditions. Lake Alvin Recreation Area east of Harrisburg and Beaver Creek Nature Area southeast of Brandon are closed due to damage from high flood waters earlier in the week.
