Rapid City police rescue 2-year-old taken hostage in standoff

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Police say that a standoff in Rapid City between police and a burglary suspect who took a 2-year-old boy hostage has ended after more than 6 hours and that the child has been safely returned to his family.
Rapid City Police Chief Karl Jegeris said late Tuesday that officers forced entry into a home in Rapid City shortly before 11 p.m. and rescued the child, who was unharmed. The suspect, a 32-year-old man, was taken into custody. No officers were injured.
Jegeris says officers were responding to a burglary when the suspect fled to a nearby home. The child's mother escaped but the boy was taken hostage.
Authorities arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping, second-degree burglary and two outstanding warrants.
