SDGA MATCH PLAY…Scott Nowak of Harrisburg shot a 71 in the qualifying round for the South Dakota Golf Association's men's match play tournament Thursday at the Golf Club at Red Rock.
Nowak earned the top seed for match play. Four golfers shot 72s: David Swafford of Lead and Tyler Barrett, Tyler Rachetto and Josh Cluff, all of Rapid City. The low 32 scores among the 97 golfers earned first-round byes. The first and second rounds of match play will be played today.
In the women's division, sisters Jordan and Sydney Bormann of Parkston shot 39s as the 16 women played only nine holes because of a weather delay. The first round of match play is today.
SDHSAA ELECTION…Run-off elections have decided two seats on the South Dakota High School Activities
Association’s board of directors.
The Division III superintendent’s seat will be filled by Linda Whitney of Sanborn Central. She was chosen over Mike Lodmel of Tri-Valley.
The large school board of education seat will be held by Sandy Klatt of Brandon Valley. James Hansen of Rapid City was the other candidate in the run-off.
Whitney’s term is for two years – Klatt will serve for four years. Both terms began July first.

SDSU SWIM ACADEMIC…The College Swimming Coaches Association of America released its 2014 spring Scholar All-America team rankings with the South Dakota State men ranked among nation's best, coming in 10th, while the women were ranked 28th.
It’s the highest-ever ranking for the Jackrabbit men. The SDSU men boasted a 3.34 GPA, while the women compiled a 3.47 GPA.
The award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the semester coinciding with the NCAA championships.

GFP-SEASONS… The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission finalized the antelope and early fall Canada goose seasons this week.
The firearms antelope season will run from October fourth through the 19th, and have 2,705 licenses available for residents and 61 licenses available for nonresidents. Tripp and Lyman counties, and the Fort Pierre National Grasslands unit, are closed for firearms and archery antelope hunting this year.
The early fall Canada goose season will run from September first through the 30th.
The commission made an amendment to the fall turkey hunting season, delaying action until their August meeting.
The amendment would decrease the total number of fall turkey licenses any one hunter could have from five to two.
The fall turkey season is proposed to begin November first and end January 31st.

PETERSON CHILD… A man charged with killing the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in South Dakota last fall says the child choked on strawberry fruit snacks while he was in the bathroom.
Joseph Patterson, 28, is facing second-degree murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault charges in the death of two-year-old Tyrese Ruffin.
Patterson gave his version of events through his lawyer as he appeared in court Thursday for a motion hearing.
Prosecutors want jurors to hear evidence from previous accusations of child abuse against Patterson.
Defense lawyer Tim Rensch says the similarities aren't clear enough to allow the prejudicial testimony.
Patterson remains in custody on a $1 million cash bond. He was arrested again in June following accusations that he assaulted the boy's mother.
