STATE B LEGION… The five-day, double-elimination state "B" American Legion baseball tourney will start Friday in Tabor. Groton won the state title last year in Webster.
Friday’s first-round pairings: McCook/Miner vs. Castlewood/Clear Lake at 10 a.m.; Groton vs. Piedmont 30 minutes after the first game; Madison vs. Parkston at 5 p.m.; and Dakota Valley vs. Tabor 30 minutes after the 5 p.m. game. The championship is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday.

JR. LEGION…The South Dakota Junior Legion baseball tournament starts Wednesday in Aberdeen. The first round draw:
GAME 1: Brandon Valley vs. Brookings Chutes, 10 a.m.
GAME 2: Pierre vs. Sioux Falls West, 12:30 p.m.
GAME 3: Renner Post 307 vs. Rapid City Post 22 Expos, 5 p.m.
GAME 4: Yankton vs. Aberdeen Smitty’s, 7:30 p.m.

BOMBERS MAROON…The Brookings Bombers Maroon rallied from a large deficit to win the first game, but Watertown came back to get a split of Monday’s doubleheader in Watertown.
Brookings trailed 10-1 early in the opener, but rallied to win 22-15. Jay Wilber came on to pitch midway through the game, and held down Watertown for the win.
Watertown jumped out early in game two, and cruised to a 14-0, three-inning win.
Brookings plays Wednesday night at Sioux Falls.

SDSU GOLF COACH…Former University of Tennessee Director of Instruction/Player Development for men’s golf Casey VanDamme has been hired as the head coach of the South Dakota State men’s and women’s golf programs.
VanDamme has spent the last five seasons as the assistant coach for the Volunteers men’s golf program. During his tenure, Tennessee equaled its best postseason stretch in school history with five trips to the NCAA Championship regionals in five years, advancing to the 2010, 2011 and 2013 NCAA Championship.
VanDamme has worked with PGA Tour players, including as an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship.
He began his collegiate golf career at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000.

SDGA ADULT-JUNIOR…Brookings golfer Jake Steen won’t forget this year’s SDGA Adult-Junior tournament.
Steen aced the par-three, third hole at Broadland Creek in Huron with a pitching wedge. Jake, and his father Brent, shot an 83 in the 16-18 division.

SDSU WBB SKED…Matchups with seven teams that played in the postseason a year ago, a pair of Big East opponents and a Southeastern Conference foe highlight the 2014-15 South Dakota State women's basketball schedule.
The Jackrabbits, who are coming off their eighth 20-win season and eighth Division I postseason appearance in 2013-14, host six home nonconference games, plus two exhibitions, in November and December.
November 14 marks the opening of the 49th season of women’s basketball at South Dakota State when Brigham Young University comes to town. SDSU plays Big East opponents Nov. 18 and 22. A rematch between the Jacks and WNIT qualifier Creighton University is Nov. 18 in Frost Arena and the first meeting at NCAA participant DePaul Nov. 22.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Jackrabbits are at the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., where they play either Northern Illinois, Delaware State or host UNLV Nov. 29-30.
SDSU opens December at SEC foe Arkansas Dec. 4. It will be the schools’ first meeting in women’s basketball.
SDSU concludes its nonconference schedule when it plays at NCAA qualifier Marist Dec. 21 and at Northern Iowa Dec. 29.
The Jackrabbits also host a pair of exhibition games against NCAA Division II opponents South Dakota Tech and Northern State, Oct. 30 and Nov. 8, respectively, to tip off the season.

SDSU TENNIS…South Dakota State has signed four recruits for the 2014-15 tennis season.
Elif Gabb and Maria Laura Velazco Fasce will join the women’s squad, while Marco Paulo Castro and Stefano Blatt are set to join the Jackrabbit men.
Gabb, a Surrey, England native had a top-23 UK ranking in both U16 and U18 and was a state champion in both age groups. Fasce comes to Brookings from Barquisimeto, Venezuela with a No. 19 ranking in Venezuela. She is also ranked No. 8 in her region and No. 5 in her state.
Castro and Blatt will both make the trek to Brookings from Brazil. Castro hails from Uberlandia, while Blatt calls Sao Leopoldo home. Castro was ranked as high as No. 22, while winning multiple state and national tournaments throughout his junior career. Blatt was a three-time national doubles champion, while being ranked as high as 11th in doubles and 17th in singles.

BHS ACTIVITIES SIGNUP…Wednesday and Thursday, July 30th and 31st, the Brookings High School activities office will host a mandatory activities sign-up for students in sports grades 7-12, and fine arts in grades 9-12.
The sign-up is for all students taking part in a sport or fine art during the upcoming school year. Sign-ups each day run from 9am to 3pm.
Several forms need to be filled out and submitted. Those can be found on the school district website under the "Activities Forms" section.

AUGIE HOF… Five former student-athletes, who excelled in their chosen sports, have been selected for induction into the Augustana College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Paul Schenkelberg (basketball), Kurt Jonker (football), Jenny Hill (softball), Jon Harris (football), and Leah Gifford (track/cross country) will be honored at the Augustana Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet on September 26 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.
