Extensive weekend rains have streams on the rise again.
Fortunately, enough time had elapsed since the last major
rain event that things had settled down. Brookings County
Emergency Management Director Todd Struwe says the
rainfall has added to the river, but the river is handling it well
right now.
Meantime, he's working on the latest disaster information
for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Brookings
and 27 other South Dakota counties were recently given
a Presidential Disaster Declaration for this spring's flooding.
The declaration covers public infrastructure. Preliminary
damage estimates for this spring's flooding stand at
$539,000.
FEMA teams will eventually be here to assess damages but
they will be delayed due to the disasters down south and in
Missouri this weekend.
There are townships in Brookings County that have not yet
been able to make repairs to roads damaged in last fall's
flooding.
