Brookings 8th Grader Alex Kimm is in the top ten in
the National Geography Bee in Washington, DC and will
compete in the finals Wednesday morning.
The 13-year-old Mickelson Middle School student
recently won the State Geogrpahy Bee for the 3rd
straight year.
Dick Turner is a Geography Teacher at Mickelson and is
with Kimm at the competition. He says Kimm won a spot in
the finals in a tie breaker against 9 other competitors
by answering the first question of the tie breaker correctly.
There were 54 students compteting in the bee. The
finals are hosted by Jeopardy's Alex Trebek and also
sponsored by National Geographic and Google.
Turner says this competition is very difficult. Saying even
he and a colleague had to give some thought into each
question.
Kimm has also won the South Dakota Math Counts
Competition for 3 straight years.
The Geography Bee will be shown on the National
Geographic Channel the week of June 13th.
