Train derails, ethanol cars burn in Raymond, MN

A train derailment early Thursday morning forces evacuations in the small town of Raymond, Minnesota, about 15 miles southwest of Wilmar.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office says a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train derailed on the western edge of town at about 1:00 am.

Emergency crews responded and found what that 22 cars were off the tracks. A fire started among some derailed tank cars. Firefighters from Raymond and surrounding communities responded.

The train had been carrying what the railroad described as “mixed freight.” including ethanol and corn syrup. The fire from the ethanol tank cars was allowed to burn out.

About 150 people from Raymond were evacuated overnight to the school in nearby Prinsburg, MN.
