BMU: potential scammers going door-to-door

Brookings Municipal Utilities and Swiftel Communications warn of a potential scam.

There are people misrepresenting themselves as either BMU or Swiftel Communications employees. They’re asking to see residents’ monthly bills or want to discuss recent utility usage amounts. These individuals are not BMU or Swiftel Communications employees. Their employees do not go door to door to discuss monthly bills or utility usage. Scams by phone can also occur. If you question the validity of a caller, hang up and call the business back at their listed number.

There are some circumstances where BMU and Swiftel Communications employees would go door to door. Those instances include discussing upcoming construction projects or to address a matter that would require an immediate service interruption to fix. BMU and Swiftel Communications’ staff will typically be in uniform and be driving marked vehicles.
