Brookings man arrested for stealing from charity

A Brookings man is arrested for allegedly embezzling from a charity.

According to police, they were requested by the Loban Memorial Foundation to conduct a criminal investigation into an allegation of embezzlement that was discovered during an internal audit.

Police lt. Joe Fishbaugher says the foundation’s bank records from 2016 to 2023 were obtained and analyzed. He says they show that the treasurer of the foundation, 45-year-old Nicholas Kleven of Brookings, had been stealing money.

It’s alleged Kleven had stolen over $14,000 between 2016 and 2019.

Kleven was arrested Monday for Embezzlement and Grand Theft.
