Brookings teen arrested after short pursuit in stolen vehicle

A Brookings teen is arrested following a short pursuit in a stolen vehicle.

Assistant Police Chief Derrick Powers says it started as a reported stolen vehicle Monday afternoon from a residence on the 400 block of Medary Avenue South.

The reporting party said a juvenile had been helping with some work around the house. The young man left and a short time later, a vehicle that had been parked in the driveway was gone.

That 1992 Cadillac was spotted by police shortly after 6:00 p.m. on 22nd Avenue near Elmwood. Police attempted to pull it over, but the vehicle fled through residential areas at speeds up to 50 mph.

Powers says the chase only lasted a few minutes and the car was abandoned in a parking lot on the 100 block of Main Avenue South. Two people were seen running away from the Caddy.

Police found a juvenuile running nearby and he was identified as the driver. The 16-year-old male from Brookings was taken into custody and to juvenile detention. He’s facing charges of aggravated eluding, reckless driving and theft of a motor vehicle as well as several traffic violations.

The passenger later came to the police department on their own and is not facing charges.
