Crews fight wildfire near Hill City

Crews are battling a fire just outside Hill City near Palmer Creek Road that has is about 90 acres and is 40% contained. The fire is burning on Black Hills National Forest lands, near the Black Elk Wilderness

The rough,steep terrain and extremely dry conditions are making fighting the fire very difficult. Local, state, and federal agencies are all involved. Heavy smoke and snags continue to be a concern for firefighters.

Officials are concerned because today’s forecast includes strong winds and critical fire weather conditions.

The plan is to reinforce the fire lines as best they can today.

One firefighter has been injured battling the blaze. No homes or buildings have been destroyed.

Palmer Creek Road is currently closed to the public.
