DNA testing required to confirm Elkton car/train crash victim ID’s
Names have been released in the August 18th car/train collision in Elkton.
Due to injuries sustained in the crash, a DNA confirmation process was required for positive identification of the two victims. That confirmation is now complete.
The two men killed have been identified as the driver, 28-year-old Devon Fletcher of Pipestone, Minnesota and the passenger, 37-year-old Donovan Hollis of Trosky, Minnesota.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, an SUV was southbound on S.D. Highway 13. For an unknown reason, the SUV crashed through the warning arm of the train crossing and struck the train that was crossing the highway. The SUV caught fire and the two occupants were trapped inside.
The train derailed and crashed into a grain elevator.
SD Hwy 13 was closed for several hours and then reopened. Cornell Avenue was closed for the next several days while derailed train cars were removed.
