Elkton fire hydrant extensively damaged in hit and run

A fire hydrant in Elkton was extensively damaged in a hit and run accident sometime between Wednesday evening and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. It happened at the intersection of 2nd Street and Cornell Avenue.
Brookings County Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says the impact caused damage to the hydrant and infrastructure below. The estimated damages are $4,500. That does not include an estimated 20,000 gallons of water which escaped the system.
