Local fire departments deal with two grass fires

Local fire departments deal with two grass fires in Monday’s dry and extremely windy conditions.

According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Department, the first was reported about 3:30 pm west of Volga near 45927 212th Street. Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says the Volga and Sinai Fire Departments responded. Sebring says the property owner had burned a pile of tree branches on Saturday and it’s believed the burn pile reignited, causing grass to burn downwind. The fire was extinguished and no structures were damaged.

Sebring says the second grass fire was reported about 4:50 p.m. at the railroad tracks east of Aurora near the intersection of 481st Avenue and 215th Street. The Elkton Fire Department responded and put out the fire. No structures were damaged. It’s believed the fire was started by sparks from the tracks as a train had recently passed through the area.
