Local fire departments respond to out-of-control burns

Local fire departments respond to two fires that got out of control Tuesday.

Brookings County Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says the White Fire Department responded just before 2:00 pm to a residence northeast of White. A resident was burning brush when the fire spread into a tree line. It burned only dry brush.

The second was reported in a field east of Lake Campbell. The Brookings Fire Department responded to this out-of-control prescribed burn.

Sebring says the fire went out of control within a minute of being lit. Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames after a large portion of the field had burned. There was no damage to structures or other property.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents of the potential dangers from open burning. Wind and moisture conditions are making brush in the area very flammable. County residents are required to call dispatch at 692-2113 prior to igniting any open burning.
