Man sentenced after 2021 standoff Pine Ridge home

PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) — A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison after a standoff with law enforcement officers at his home in Pine Ridge.

Daniel Tobacco was sentenced Monday for assault on a law enforcement officer and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime. He pleaded guilty to the charges in December.

Prosecutors said Tobacco fired several shots at law enforcement officers who were called to his home in September 2021. After several hours, he went into woods near his home. A tribal criminal investigator who followed him was shot, and Tobacco was shot 11 times before he was arrested.
