A Renner, S.D. man has been identified as the person who died in a fatal crash Saturday morning on Interstate 29 west of Flandreau.

A pickup, pulling a trailer carrying a 4-wheeler, was northbound on I-29 when the driver hit a patch of ice and lost control. The pickup entered the median, rolled and came to rest on its roof.

The driver, 60-year-old Kasper Malsam, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle onto the interstate’s southbound lanes. He was struck by a southbound SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An 11-year-old female passenger in the pickup received minor injuries. The driver of the SUV, 54-year-old Thomas Sterzinger of Taunton, Minnesota, was not injured. Both of them were wearing seat belts.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
