Petition drive can begin for ballot measure to eliminate state sales tax on food
The group Dakotans for Health has received final approval from the South Dakota Secretary of State to start collecting signatures for a ballot measure to repeal the state’s tax on food.
Co-founder Rick Weiland says the legislature is out of step with what the people want and need.
Governor Kristi Noem pushed for eliminating the sales tax on food during this year’s session but legislators did not go along and instead passed a cut in the overall sales tax.
Weiland says South Dakota is one of only three states in the country that still taxes groceries at the full state sales tax rate and they are going to change that.
