South Dakota DOH reports first human West Nile death of 2021
South Dakota has recorded its first West Nile virus death of the year.
Th Department of Health reports it was a 42-year-old female, Union County resident.
The department is encouraging residents to take the necessary precautions to avoid contracting West Nile Virus. Draining standing water and limiting evening outdoor activities during mosquito season can reduce the risk. Wearing the proper repellent and long pants and sleeves can also help.
South Dakota has historically had a disproportionately high number of West Nile cases compared to other states.
