South Dakota House votes down effort to place statewide sports betting on ballot

The South Dakota Legislature will not put a constitutional amendment on the ballot allowing statewide electronic sports gambling

It would be up to the gaming industry or others after the House killed HJR 5006 on a 28 to 41 vote.

Proponents say South Dakota is losing gaming revenue to Iowa and black market bookies.

Opponents pointed to the addictive nature of gambling and say South Dakota has the country’s second or third-highest gambling addiction rate. According to a study by WalletHub, South Dakota has the second-highest rate, behind only Nevada.
