Two people drown on Lake Sharpe near Pierre

Authorities say two people drowned Wednesday while fishing Lake Sharpe near Pierre.

Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan says his office received a report Wednesday night of two missing persons last seen fishing earlier in the evening near Farm Island.

He says sheriff’s deputies and Game, Fish and Parks officers began a search of the area. Callahan says drones from Hughes County Emergency Management and divers from the Pierre Fire Rescue Squad helped with the search.

He says the bodies of the two missing individuals were recovered from the water a short time later.

Names of the victims are not being released pending notification of family and the investigation continues.
