Two people killed when an ATV goes through the ice at Lake Poinsett

Two people die after going through the ice on Lake Poinsett.

The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Department says it was reported shortly after 6:00 o’clock Saturday evening. Two people on an ATV had broken through the ice.

Emergency and law enforcement personnel from several agencies were sent to the scene. It happened on the northern end of the lake, south of Stone Bridge

The two were retrieved from the water and taken by ambulances to Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown where the 60-year-old man and the 9-year-old boy were both pronounced dead.

Shortly after, a 911 call came in that a four-wheeler and shack had broken through the ice and were partially in the water on Lake Poinsett’s northeast region. Emergency personnel were called to the scene. No injuries were reported in that incident.

The Sheriff’s department cautions anglers that ice thickness can change from several inches to just an inch in a matter of a few feet. Warmer weather this week will further weaken the ice.
