Brookings resident victimized in arrest warrant scam

A Brookings man has been victimized by calls claiming there was a warrant out for his arrest.

The man reported to police Saturday that he had been receiving calls from a person who claimed to be a government official. The caller told the man he would be arrested if he did not send money in the form of Target gift cards.

The man ended up buying some $3000 in Target and Walmart gift cards and giving the numbers for those cards to the scammers.

Brookings Police Lt. Marci Gebers says law enforcement agencies will never try to collect money in this way.
