Food delivery robots start rolling at SDSU

Starting today, SDSU students can have food delivered by robot.

The self-driving delivery bots are currently in use on more than 20 college campuses in the U.S.

The Starship Technologies robots are able to climb curbs, avoid foot, bike and vehicle traffic and withstand winter and rainy weather. The six-wheeled robots are about the size of a large cooler.

The robots travel at just four miles and hour and have built-in security cameras. The ordered items are locked inside and can only be accessed with the mobile phone of the customer who ordered the items.

There are 16 of the robots in use starting today.

Each order using the robots will include a $1.99 service charge on the student’s meal plan.
