Freezing Rain and Numerous Power Outages
Widespread rain and freezing rain is forecast for the much of the Upper Midwest this weekend. There have been reports of slick roads in Eastern South Dakota and a coating of ice from one quarter inch to a half an inch in the Twin Cities making travel almost impossible. Minnesota State Patrol reports 357 crashes, 34 involved injuries, and two were fatal. There were 149 spinouts and 13 jackknifed semis.
The freezing rain has already been an apparent cause for power outages in the area. According to the SDREA, 29 are without power in Deuel County, 17 in Lake County, 8 in Pipestone County and 489 without power in Minnehaha County.
Brookings could potentially see up to a 0.1 of an inch of ice accumulation today into Sunday.
