Inmates indicted for assaulting SD Penitentiary prison guards

Two state prison inmates have been indicted on charges including Attempted First Degree Murder for their attack on two correctional officers at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

A Minnehaha County Grand Jury Tuesday indicted 48-year-old Lester Monroe and 30-year-old Kyle Jones for Attempted First Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer and Aggravated Assault Against a Department of Corrections Employee.

Jones also was indicted on a charge of Simple Assault involving a second correctional officer.

In that August 24th incident, a correctional officer was assaulted by the two inmates at the Jameson Annex. The second officer was attacked after arriving to help. Both officers were taken to a local hospital, treated and released.

The attempted murder charge carries a maximum penalty of 50-years in prison.

The two inmates continue to be held at the State Penitentiary.
