The South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to revoke the law enforcement certification of Mellette County Sheriff Mike Blom for conduct unbecoming a law enforcement officer.

Evidence presented indicated that Blom had been in a relationship with a woman who was on supervised probation. One of the conditions of her probation was that she not consume alcoholic beverages or enter bars.

Blom and the woman, accompanied by another couple, entered several bars in different towns on November 11th. Blom purchased alcohol for the woman, despite knowing it was a violation of her probation. The other couple became involved in an assault and Blom did not take appropriate action nor report the assault.

Blom also lied about the night’s activities to a DCI agent.

The Commission’s action does not remove Blom from office, but does remove his law enforcement powers and authorities immediately.

He can appeal the decision to a circuit court.
