BROOKINGS (10-7-27) — Brookings Radio, in conjunction with the Brookings Beacon, now presents election 2026 coverage. Today we begin with profiles of the two candidates for Brookings County Sheriff.
Dave Biteler is a Republican candidate. He has over 20 years law enforcement experience and currently serves as Assistant Sheriff for Brookings County.
Biteler says his top priority would be increased visibility… “We have some very great communities across the county, and just giving them the attention that they need and being visible for them, becoming part of that community, attending city council meetings, the city events — just being there on the off-times of those events and visible to the public.”
He also wants to improve staffing levels… “In Brookings County itself with the square miles that we have, we should not have one deputy working by themselves at any given time. And that is one of the biggest hurdles that we need to tackle first I feel is the staffing and/or the scheduling so that we can get that put together.”
Biteler said his administrative experience uniquely qualifies him to become sheriff… “Working with the budget — the overall budget of the sheriff’s office is over $5 million, with just over half of that being the jail itself — and helping the sheriff the last five to six years with both of those budgets gives me a leg up I feel in the administration portion of the sheriff’s office itself.”

The election is November 3. Early/absentee voting is already underway. Tomorrow (Thursday, October 8) we’ll hear from Independent candidate for sheriff Manny Langstraat.
