MOODY COUNTY (10-27-26) — Four people died Monday (October 26) in a three-vehicle crash in Moody County.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says it happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. on I-29 at mile marker 119, ten miles north of Colman.

The highway patrol said a 15-year old girl from Flandreau was driving southbound on I-29, began passing a southbound semi-truck, and collided with a northbound car driven by an 88-year old man from Hendricks, Minnesota.

The patrol said the two vehicles collided head-on, and then one was also struck by the semi — which subsequently jackknifed.

The highway patrol reports that the 15-year old girl sustained fatal injuries, as did two passengers — a 12-year old girl and a 16-year old girl, both also from Flandreau. Another 12-year old girl from Flandreau sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The 88-year old man from Hendricks also sustained fatal injuries. The semi-truck driver was not injured.

Southbound lanes on I-29 were closed for about six hours after the accident.

Names have not been released pending notification of family members. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate.
