BROOKINGS COUNTY (9-24-26) — The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responds to two separate juvenile threats at local school districts.
The first was reported September 23 shortly after 12:30 p.m. and involved a Deubrook student who received a threatening message from another juvenile.
During the investigation, deputies said they learned threats were made towards other students as well. Sheriff’s deputies say they identified and took into custody the student who made those threats.
In a joint, written statement, Deubrook Principal Brad DeBeer and Superintendent Skyler Frederick wrote: “We want to reassure our families that our students and staff are safe, and there is no ongoing threat to our school or students.”
The second incident was reported later September 23, shortly before 3 p.m. in Elkton.
The sheriff’s office responded to a staff report of a juvenile student mentioning a potential school threat. Sheriff’s deputies say they quickly identified and took that student into custody as well.
The Elkton School District later issued a written statement saying: “We believe it’s critical to take concerns seriously and follow security procedures when a threat of any kind is brought to our attention. We assure our families that the safety and well-being of our students and staff will always remain our highest priority.”
