Brookings, SD (9-17-26) — The Brookings Area United Way’s Volunteer United program proudly recognizes Robin Buterbaugh, Tyler Hanson, Perry Johnson, Joe Salvati, and Wendy Long as the September 2026 Volunteers of the Month.
Together, these five community leaders have made a lasting impact at the Brookings Boys & Girls Club Teen Center by sharing their time, knowledge, and unique passions with local youth. Through diverse programs including gardening, esports, outdoor adventures, creative arts, and hands-on learning, they have opened new doors for members to build critical skills and discover lifelong interests.
What sets this group apart is the meaningful personal connection each volunteer brings to the Teen Center. Whether they are teaching a new technical skill, tending the garden, introducing hobbies, or simply showing up with enthusiasm, these mentors create an environment where local teens feel supported, included, and inspired to grow.
“Their combined efforts are a wonderful example of the profound difference community members can make when they invest in local youth,” said Heidi Gullickson, Brookings Area United Way Executive Director. “Through their generosity and dedication, they have expanded opportunities, strengthened relationships, and helped build a stronger bridge between the Teen Center and the broader Brookings community.”
