BROOKINGS (9-30-26) — The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will perform at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on October 11.
David Reynolds is head of the Performing Arts Department at SDSU… “The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is out of New York City. They represent the finest jazz musicians that you will ever hear anywhere, and they have been headed for many years by the famous trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.”
He said Marsalis will be stepping down soon… “He’s going to continue in his role as an adviser to the organization and as an adviser to Lincoln Center, but he is no longer going to be with the group. So it is possibly in our region the last time that folks will be able to hear Wynton Marsalis perform live.”
Reynolds said this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity… “There’s about twelve stops on this tour. Just this past week, he played the Hollywood Bowl and sold 11 thousand tickets to see this concert. So we are incredibly honored that he is coming our way, and all of us in Brookings are going to have them all to ourselves for one wonderful evening.”
He said jazz music is a unique product of the United States… “It’s the music of the Americas. The syncopation, the forms, the harmonies that have advanced through the years are really something that’s uniquely American. Once people listen to jazz — if they’re in Europe or they’re in the Asian countries or Africa — they recognize it as something from the United States.”
Reynolds said tickets are still available… “It is a 7 p.m. show, and there are about 100 to 150 seats left. They are going very very quickly. The place seats a thousand, and I think anyone that’s been in Larson Memorial Concert Hall knows that there is not a bad seat in the house. So there’s still plenty of time for you to find a really good seat.”
The October 11 performance is part of this year’s Woodbine Productions concert series.
