One person dead after exchanging gunfire with Sioux Falls police

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Police officers in Sioux Falls exchanged gunfire with someone during a traffic stop Tuesday, leaving one person dead.

The Sioux Falls Police Department says an investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation.

The police department says its officers and a deputy with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a traffic stop when at least one person “engaged” the officers with a firearm. The police department says officers returned fire. One subject has been pronounced dead.

Authorities have not said who died or what their role was in the shooting.
