Plan for new Mitchell High School was $20 million over budget

School officials in Mitchell are working on trimming the budget for a new high school that initially came in way over budget.

The Mitchell School Board were shown plans in June that included a price tag $20 million more than the $42 million budget.

The Board this week saw updated plans that would be under budget. However, it also means portions of the school, including a new main gymnasium, auxiliary gymnasium, locker rooms, a tornado shelter, and more, would not be built until additional funding could be secured.

The plan is for students to use the gymnasium and other athletic facilities at the current high school. Mitchell School Superintendent Dr. Joe Graves says the hope is that the rest of the school could be completed within five years.

The hope to begin construction on the new school in the spring.
