Small twister confirmed in Grant County

One of the first confirmed tornadoes of the year in South Dakota was reported late Saturday afternoon in Grant County.

National Weather Service forecaster Ryan Vipond says it was spotted some 14-miles south of Milbank at about 5:00 pm. Hesays it was a brief severe weather event that did not result in any damage. It was seen to kick up some dirt. Vipond says there were also sightings of several, small “rope” tornadoes that did not touch down.

Vipond says the weak tornado was likely an EF-0 on the Fujita scale.

South Dakota reports an average of about three-dozen confirmed tornadoes each year.
