SDSU FOOTBALL…J’Bore Gibbs threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jaxon Janke to break open the game in the fourth quarter and South Dakota State beat Southern Illinois 28-10 on Saturday in a Missouri Valley Football League opener.

The Salukis (2-3) led 10-9 at halftime after Kare Lyles passed 19 yards to Nigel Kilby with 12 seconds left in the second quarter. But Pierre Strong burst through the line for the go-ahead score on a 64-yard run midway through the third quarter. Strong, who had four runs of over 25 yards, finished with a season-high 229 yards on 20 carries for the Jackrabbits (4-1), ranked third in the FCS.

Gibbs threw a 58-yard TD pass to Cade Johnson in the first quarter and Chase Vinatieri, nephew of NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri, had a 39-yard field goal and finished the game with the Jackrabbits’ record for career points via kicking at 322.

South Dakota State has now won the last four meetings with SIU.

In an odd turn of events, the lead group of the women’s race (including several Jackrabbits) took a wrong turn and were misdirected off the course, thus not registering times.

2017 Summit League Champion Chase Cayo returned to the Jacks lineup for his first race of the season Saturday morning, turning in a third-overall finish with a time of 25:30.95.

BHS XC…Brookings competed in Saturday’s Alexandria Lions Meet of Champions cross country event.

SDSU (9-3, 1-0 Summit League) has won seven-straight contests and saw three different Jackrabbits find the net: Maya Hansen, Carina McLennan and Sunniva Dunagan.

Gabby Vivier-Hannay and Leah Manuleleua added assists in the win, as South Dakota State outshot the Fighting Hawks, 20-4.   Maggie Smither posted her 27th career shutout in the win, stopping the lone UND shot on goal.

HS SOCCER…First round pairings for the South Dakota high school soccer playoffs are set.  Matches will be played Tuesday.
In Class AA Boys, defending champion Sioux Falls Washington enters as the #1 overall seed after a 10-0-2 regular season. The Warriors have outscored their opponents 29-to-5 on the season, including a scoreless tie against second-seeded Sioux Falls Roosevelt late last month.

On the Class AA Girls side, the 11-0-2 Yankton Gazelles have earned home field advantage throughout the postseason. Aberdeen Central enters as the #2 seed, and the two-time defending champion Pierre Governors will open the playoffs on the road at eighth-seeded O’Gorman.

Top-seeded Sioux Falls Christian and second-seed Tea Area headline the Class A Boys’ bracket. The Chargers and Titans each have four State Championship game appearances since the onset of sanctioned soccer in 2012, including last year’s Championship match, where Tea defeated SFC for their second consecutive crown.

Three-time defending Class A Girls’ champion West Central enters this year’s postseason as the second seed, just behind Tea Area.

SDSU GOLF…The South Dakota State men’s golf team is tied for 11th place after the initial 18 holes of the Intercollegiate at The Grove on Sunday in College Grove, Tenn.

The Jackrabbits recorded a first-round score of 304 (+16) to tie with Tennessee Tech and Mercer. Leading the 14-team field is Tennessee with 284 (-4), while Lamar and Troy are tied for second at 292 (+4).

Jones Comerford leads the way for the Jacks, sitting tied for seventh with a score of 71 (-1). Jonah Dohrer is tied for 37th after firing a 76 (+4) in the opening round.

Harry Duggan ranks third on the Jacks’ squad and is tied for 59th overall at 78 (+6). Jack Tanner and Jacob Otta round out the South Dakota State lineup with scores of 79 (+7) and 85 (+13), respectively.

Golfing as an individual in the event, Matthew Schaefer shot an 80 (+8) in the first round.

SDSU SOCCER ACADEMIC…South Dakota State women’s soccer posted a 3.604 combined grade point average to earn the United Soccer Coaches’ Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 season, announced this week by the organization.

Six Jackrabbits posted 4.0 grade point averages for the year, while 19 student-athletes had a 3.5 GPA or better. Out of 26 individuals on last year’s roster, 24 had a 3.0-plus GPA.

SDSU finished with the 35th highest combined GPA among Division I teams and were 68th in the country between NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA programs.

THOMAS-SUMMIT…The University of St. Thomas, soon to be kicked out of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for competitive reasons, has received an invitation to join the Summit League with the goal of taking its sports teams from Division III to Division I.

University President Julie Sullivan says the school has submitted a waiver request to the NCAA for a reclassification process that would allow it to bypass Division II and thus accelerate the move. If that’s granted, St. Thomas would become the 10th member of the Summit League in the fall of 2021. The Tommies would have to find a different conference for their football and men’s and women’s hockey teams.

In May, the MIAC announced it had decided to oust St. Thomas, the largest school in the league, one of the founding members in 1920 and the most successful in recent years in sports. Conference presidents cited athletic parity as their primary concern; the Tommies have won 12 consecutive MIAC all-sports trophies.

Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple says the conference president’s council “unanimously and enthusiastically” voted to approve the application by St. Thomas.

Current members of the Summit League are Denver, Fort Wayne, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Omaha, Oral Roberts, South Dakota, South Dakota State, and Western Illinois.

FIREWORKS OVER FIREWORKS…The University of Maine is unhappy with Kent State’s investigation of a decision to cut short a tied women’s field hockey game to make way for fireworks for a football game.

Kent State said an investigation by its Office of Compliance, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action concluded there was no Title IX violation or gender-related bias.

Media reports say UMaine is disappointed that Kent State, which hosted the game, didn’t interview student-athletes who were “disrespected.”

The UMaine-Temple match was stopped before the second overtime to clear the field for pregame fireworks scheduled 90 minutes later for a football game at an adjacent stadium.

Kent State apologized and said the game should’ve continued. It offered to reimburse UMaine and Temple if they choose to replay the game.
