Sioux Valley ended a three-game losing streak on Friday night with a win over Beresford.
Elkton-Lake Benton lost a close one to Dell Rapids St. Mary and Brookings was defeated by Sioux Falls Christian.
Sioux Valley 14, Beresford 7
VOLGA – The Cossacks took the lead in the third quarter and held off the Watchdogs the rest of the way.
Neither team scored in the first quarter and then each team found the end zone in the second. Wyatt Hardt broke the scoreless tie for the Cossacks with 5:54 left in the first half as he worked his way into the end zone from two yards out. Sioux Valley failed on the two-point conversion and led 6-0.
Beresford then took the lead two minutes later. Ashton Oberle found Evan Rosheim for a 40-yard score with 3:55 left in the half and Tate Lyle kicked the extra point to make it 7-6. Neither team scored the rest of the half.
Wyatt Hardt put the Cossacks back in front in the final minute of the third quarter. He scored from a yard out with 33 seconds left and then ran in the two-point conversion as well to give Sioux Valley a 14-7 lead going into the final quarter. A quarter in which neither team scored.
Sioux Valley had 329 total yards and did a lot of damage on the ground with 258 rushing yards. Trey Wyman led the Cossacks with 87 yards on 15 carries. Wyatt Hardt had 85 yards on 25 carries and Kellon Tucker had five carries for 29 yards.
Wyatt Hardt was 4-of-8 for 71 yards through the air. Westin Pitts had two catches for 47 yards and Ashton Warne had a 17-yard catch.
Wyatt Hardt and Pitts led the Cossack defense with eight tackles each. Harvey Hardt and Ethon Hemmestad each had an interception.
Sioux Valley will have the week off and then plays at No. 1 ranked Elk-Point Jefferson on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
Dell Rapids 22, Elkton Lake Benton 20
DELL RAPIDS – ELB dropped 2-3 with the close loss to unbeaten DRSM. The Elks trailed at halftime and then held the Cardinals scoreless in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
DRSM led 16-6 at the end of the first quarter. Brady Jewitt got the Cardinals on the board with a 57-yard passing touchdown to Logan Bauer. Pano Skliris ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.
ELB’s Cade Crofutt ran in a six-yard touchdown but the Elks failed on the two-point conversion and it was 8-6. The Cardinals responded with a 35-yard touchdown from Jewett to Jake Heinitz and then Skliris ran in the two-point conversion again to make it 16-6 going into the second.
The Elks cut into the lead with a nine-yard score from Crofutt and then they converted the two-point conversion to make it 16-14. They were then on the doorstep of taking the lead but fumbled and Bauer recovered it and returned it 93 yards for a score. The Cardinals failed on the two-point conversion but led 22-14 at halftime.
Brock Johnson had a 60-yard rushing touchdown for the Elks in the third quarter but they did not convert on the two-point conversion and still trailed 22-20. That score remained the rest of the game and DRSM remained unbeaten.
The Elks had 330 total yards and 324 of them came on the ground. Johnson led the way with 160 yards on 18 carries and Crofutt had 125 yards on 29 carries.
The Elks will remain on the road this weekend and play at Howard at 7 p.m.
Sioux Falls Christian 48, Brookings 0
SIOUX FALLS – It was another tough night for the ‘Cats as they failed to score for a second-straight week.
Sioux Falls Christian led 14-0 at the end of the first and then took a 28-0 lead into halftime. The Chargers extended the lead to 35-0 by the end of the third quarter and then scored two more touchdowns in the final 12 minutes.
The Bobcats fell to 0-4 with the loss. They will return home this Friday for their homecoming game against Spearfish. Kickoff at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
