BROOKINGS – The Brookings girls’ soccer team took down Brandon Valley in penalty kicks in the first round of the Class AA State Playoffs on Tuesday night at Fishback Soccer Park.
The No. 8 seeded Bobcats won the penalty shootout over the No. 9 seeded Lynx 5-3. Brookings head coach Adam Juba said it was a special night for the program because it was something that the Bobcats had never done before.
“I mean, this is the first time in program history for the girls [that we’ve won a playoff game],” Juba said. “So, it’s absolutely massive. These girls, at the beginning of the season they made a goal of winning a playoff game and they said part of that path is going to be getting to play at home, so we can feed off the energy of the crowd and be in our own stadium. They showed a lot of composure today to go out and win that game.”
The Bobcats did not miss in penalties. Lexi Erp and Josie Hegerfeld each made their shots, but the Lynx made their first two shots as well to make it 2-2. Abbi Poppinga would then put the ‘Cats up 3-2 and the next Brandon Valley shooter shot over the net. Rylee Briggs then snuck one past the keeper, but the Lynx answered, leaving it to Berkley Stoltenberg to clinch the win for Brookings.
Stoltenberg calmly kicked it into the top left corner of the net and the celebration was on for the ‘Cats.
