Brookings police officer named “South Dakota Police Officer of the Year” while a second officer wins community service award

Two Brookings police officers were honored last week during the spring meeting of the South Police Chiefs’ Association and the South Dakota Sheriffs’ Association in Deadwood.

Officer Seth Bonnema was recognized as South Dakota’s Police Officer of the Year for his exceptional efforts regarding crime prevention, traffic safety, and drug control and prevention.

Among many other instances, Officer Bonnema’s actions led to a drug bust that included 32 pounds of methamphetamine and one pound of fentanyl. Bonnema also leads the department in several categories including vehicle stops, warnings and citations, and Driving Under the Influence arrests.

Bonnema says he is humbled to have been selected for the award. The Officer of the Year Award is given jointly by the South Dakota Police Chiefs’ and South Dakota Sheriffs’ Associations for exceptional achievement in any police endeavor.

Officer Travis Asmus was presented the Chief John Wainman Sr. Service award for his high standards and contributions of service to the Brookings Community.

Officer Asmus was recognized for his dedication to several community programs including the Citizens First Responder Academy, National Night Out and his role with the Brookings County Drug Court program.

Asmus says the award that belongs to the community of Brookings and they should be proud of it.

The Chief John Wainman Sr. Service Award is given for contributions exceeding the high standards and contributions normally made by members.
