Brookings Sheriff’s Office investigating possible lug nut tampering

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Department is investigating potentially dangerous tampering with a vehicle.

Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says it was reported Wednesday evening in Volga.

A juvenile, driving south on Kasan Avenue, noticed odd sounds coming from the vehicle. When the driver stopped to inspect it, a wheel fell off.

Sebring says it appears someone intentionally loosened all the lug nuts.

The driver was able to repair the vehicle and called the sheriff’s office as there was no apparent reason for the wheel to have fallen off. It’s not certain when it may have happened. You may recall, there were several instances of lug nut tampering reported in Volga last October.

Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $850.

The sheriff’s department is asking people to check their wheels and lug nuts before driving. If you find any, or if you have any further information, contact the sheriff’s office or call Crime Stoppers at 692-STOP.
