Brookings to seek public input in hiring of next police chief

The City of Brookings is seeking public input in the hiring of the next Chief of Police. Current Chief Dave Erickson is retiring at the end of April.

The city is partnering with a consulting firm to conduct the search. It will include City, community, and police department focus groups, as well as a recruitment campaign.

As part of the process, the City will host a community conversation on Monday, April 11th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Residents will have the chance to give input and discuss what they would like to see included in a Police Chief candidate profile.

Residents who are unable to attend will be able to provide feedback through a questionnaire that can be picked up at suite 230 of the City and County Government Center or filled out online on the city’s website.

Later, the City will also host a forum with the finalists for the job, likely in July or August.
