Brookings woman facing charges after stealing kitten

A Brookings woman is facing charges after entering a residence to steal a kitten.

Detective Adam Smith says it was reported about 9:14 Monday night on the 1000 block of Western Avenue. Smith says 37-year-old Melody Hackett has been charged with burglary in the second degree, petty theft and a probation violation.

Smith says Hackett is not allowed to have animals because of a prior felony animal cruelty conviction.

The kitten was safely returned to the owner.
