Lawmakers vote to subpoena Department of Labor and former appraiser official

South Dakota lawmakers vote this morning to subpoena the Department of Labor to hand over a document regarding the attempt of Governor Kristi Noem’s daughter to win a state appraisal license.

They want to know if there was an agreement in place to give Kassidy Peters another chance at the license prior to a meeting last year in Noem’s office that has spurred conflict-of-interest questions.

The Legislature’s Government Operations and Audit Committee voted 8-2 to issue the subpoena to Dept. of Labor Secretary Marcia Hultman.

The Committee also voted 8-2 to issue a subpoena to Sheri Bren to appear before the committee. Bren is the former Executive Director of the South Dakota Appraiser Certification Program. Senator David Wheeler of Huron says Bren wants to testify but only if subpoenaed.

Bren won a $200,000 settlement from the state. Bren says she was forced to retire.

Senator Wayne Steinhauer of Hartford and Senator Jean Hunhoff of Yankton provided the “no” votes on the two supboenas.

The committee plans to meet again on this subject with the date and time to be determined.
