Man charged in Sturgis law enforcement shootout makes 1st court appearance

The man involved in a shootout with law enforcement during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally makes his initial court appearance.

Wyatt J. Fluty is facing six counts connected to the incident on August 9. Fluty was shot by law enforcement, no one else was injured.

He’s charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder, one involving a state trooper and the other a private citizen. He’s facing several lesser charges as well.

The attempted first degree murder charge involving the state trooper carries a 50-year prison sentence.

Fluty appeared in magistrate court via video conference Thursday and told the judge he understood his rights and the charges against him.

Fluty is expected to enter a plea on September 20th. He’ll remain in jail without bond.
